Chris Cassidy, National Medal of Honor Museum president and CEO, will step down from his position at the end of the year, the museum announced Oct. 9.

Cassidy, a former Navy SEAL and astronaut, was instrumental in bringing the $270 million museum to reality in the heart of the Arlington Entertainment District.

Now, the museum leadership begins a journey to find someone to fill the role.

“While it is bittersweet to depart, I do so with immense pride in what we’ve built together and full confidence that the (National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation) team will continue to carry forward our mission to inspire America,” Cassidy said in a statement.

The move comes just over seven months after the museum’s opening in March and four years after Cassidy first signed on to lead the project.

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, Cassidy said he was ready to step away now that the museum has hit its stride.

Charlotte Jones, chair of the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation, said the foundation is grateful to Cassidy for his work to get the project off the ground and that it is ready to bring in a new CEO to build upon his work.

“I could not have wished for a better partner on this project,” Jones said.

The Museum Foundation board of directors will now launch a nationwide search for a new president and CEO, though Cassidy will hold his role until the end of the year, the museum said in a news release.

Cassidy was unavailable for an interview prior to publication.
