OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – LOVB Nebraska outlasted LOVB Houston in second consecutive five-set battle Sunday afternoon, earning a 3-2 victory (22-25, 37-35, 25-19, 21-25, 15-10) at Baxter Arena.
Nebraska lost its season opener in five sets on the road at LOVB Austin.
In what marked the final home opener of Jordan Larson’s illustrious playing career, Nebraska improved to 1-1 on the season. Larson led the way with a double-double, finishing with 14 kills and 13 digs, as Nebraska placed four players in double figures for kills.
The match turned in a marathon second set, when Nebraska prevailed 37-35. The 72 combined points marked the highest-scoring set in league history, surpassing the previous record of 64 set last season against LOVB Salt Lake.
Middle blocker Ana Carolina da Silva led Nebraska with 18 points, including 11 kills and six blocks. Outside hitter Anne Buijs added another 18 points with a team high 16 kills, while opposite Kimberly Drewniok posted a second double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs for 15 points.
Middle blocker Candelaria Herrera chipped in eight kills and provided a spark off the bench.
Houston dropped to 0-2 despite strong performances from Jordan Thompson and Jess Mruzik. Thompson finished with 22 kills for her seventh 20-kill match in LOVB play, while Mruzik added 16 kills, three blocks and two aces.
Nebraska next travels to face LOVB Madison on Friday before returning home to Baxter Arena on Sunday for a 5 p.m. match against LOVB Atlanta.
