LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Christ the King Golden Lions (6-0) are the End Zone Team of the Week, after making history, defeating #3 Kingdom Prep Academy 62-38 for the first time in program history!
This is the first time Christ the King football has been in the KCBD studios as the Team of the Week. But they were named Team of the Week back in 2007 before we started bringing teams in, after they opened up district play with a 60-47 win over Wichita Christian.
And making it a full circle moment, Golden Lions head coach Corey Porter was a part of that 2007 then-Trojan team.
The 14th ranked Golden Lions were a 43-point underdog headed into the game against #3 KPA but did not let that deter them. It started out as a back-and-forth game all the way into the third quarter and as the buzzer rang out, Junior running back & outside linebacker John Sisneros trucked his way into the end zone to give Christ the King the 34-26 lead headed into the fourth quarter.
It didn’t stop there though, John Sisneros also had two kick return touchdowns as well as a fourth quarter touchdown by Junior running back & safety Oliver James, who broke three tackles hitting a Warrior with a stiff arm to get into the end zone. That fourth quarter sealed the deal for both #14 Christ the King and #3 KPA with the Golden Lions winning 62-38 to remain undefeated and open up district play 1-0.
It’s the first time the Golden Lions have beaten the Warriors in eight meetings dating back to 2011.
Christ the King opened up the season with a 48-18 win over Anton, then beat Amherst 60-13 before hitting the road beating Midland TLCA 54-6. Looking at the last three weeks, the Golden Lions beat Lazbuddie 72-22, the West Texas Tornadoes in shutout fashion 54-0, and finally this week defeating #3 KPA.
Next up, the Christ the King Golden Lions host the San Jacinto Christian Academy Patriots at 7:00 p.m. Friday night from Christ the King Field. The Patriots are 4-3 to start the 2025 season, 1-0 in district play coming off a 44-22 win at home against Holy Cross.
