It all started with the “Welcome to Lubbock” sign at the airport.

To be honest, I wish we had more of them. Lubbock is, by and large, a friendly place. People here wave, make eye contact, hold doors, and strike up conversations in grocery store aisles. A few extra “Welcome to Lubbock” signs scattered around town wouldn’t hurt a thing. Sure, they might fade into the background over time, but they’re still a small, positive gesture—and sometimes that’s enough to put a smile on someone’s face.

If you’ve flown into town recently, you may have noticed the “Welcome to Lubbock” signage wrapped around the baggage carousels at the airport. They’re clean, modern, and nicely designed. But to me, they feel just a little… unfinished. Beneath the logo is a colored bar that looks like it should say something meaningful, yet it’s completely blank. Once I noticed it, I couldn’t unsee it.

Naturally, that raised the question: what should it say?

The Obvious Answer vs. the Fun Ones

The most logical choice is probably something like “Home of Texas Tech University.” A large percentage of visitors are here for games, campus events, or university business, and that slogan would make perfect sense. Another route could be a safe, Chamber-of-Commerce-approved line like “Once you’re here, you’re family” or something equally polished and inoffensive.

But then there’s the other side of the coin.

Lubbock is also a city with a sense of humor—sometimes dry, sometimes dark, often self-aware. And that’s where things get interesting.

Instead of steering the conversation, I decided to turn it over to our Facebook audience with zero guidance and zero judgment. I didn’t ask for funny answers. I didn’t ask for positive or negative ones. I simply asked:

“Add one sentence to the bottom of this sign. What should it say?”

The Internet Did What the Internet Does

The response was immediate and overwhelming. More than 150 answers rolled in, ranging from clever and heartfelt to sarcastic, brutally honest, and laugh-out-loud funny. It turns out that when you give people a blank space and no rules, creativity shows up in force.

I’ve pulled together the first 50 or so responses to share here, and they’re absolutely worth your time. If you want to read all of them, just scroll past the photos and head straight to the original Facebook thread. Fair warning: you may find yourself nodding in agreement, laughing out loud, or wondering how some people came up with their answers in the first place.
