The Mesa Hills Leo’s Club is showing El Paso what the next generation of community leaders looks like. Recently, the youth organization took on a heartfelt mission, cleaning up the historic Smeltertown Cemetery. Check out more photos of the crew at the original KFOX article! For many in the Borderland, Smeltertown is a reminder of the city’s industrial past and the generations of hardworking families who lived in its shadow. Though time has weathered the area, these young volunteers brought new life and care to its grounds, proving that history deserves to be honored and preserved.

Club president Sophia Flores shared that their mission is simple: “help out our community” and inspire others to do the same. For the Leo’s Club, community service isn’t a side project, it’s at the heart of everything they do.

Serving El Paso Through Action and Compassion

The Smeltertown cleanup is just one example of how the Mesa Hills Leo’s Club has made service a lifestyle. Members of the group regularly take on projects that make a visible impact across the region. They’ve built beds for children who don’t have them, crafted care bags for cancer patients, and placed roses on the graves of local veterans.

“It feels great to help out someone that needs help,” said one member, reflecting on what it means to give back. Whether they’re cleaning cemeteries or showing compassion to those in need, each act strengthens El Paso’s sense of unity and pride.

Their efforts continue as they look for new ways to serve, including ongoing bed-building projects in Canutillo and community outreach programs that meet real local needs.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders

Formed just two years ago, the Mesa Hills Leo’s Club has already built an impressive record of service and leadership. As a junior branch of Lions Club International, they’ve participated in national leadership conferences, including one in Orlando, where they discussed important issues like food insecurity and challenges faced by border communities.

Their drive and teamwork represent the best of what El Paso’s youth can achieve when given a platform to serve. The Leo’s Club isn’t just improving neighborhoods, they’re inspiring others to follow their lead. Through their work, Smeltertown’s story continues, and so does El Paso’s tradition of compassion, community, and pride.
