With the Eagles losing to the 49ers in the Wild Card round on Sunday, officially meaning each NFC East team’s season is over, Tuesday’s episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks In Season with the NFC East was the seventh and final edition of this season.
The vast majority of the episode featured behind-the-scenes content of the Eagles’ week leading up to their playoff loss and the fallout after Philadelphia was eliminated. However, Cowboys fans did get an inside look at what the process of a coaching change looks like.
Two days after Dallas’ season ended, the Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and HBO had footage of head coach Brian Schottenheimer informing the coaching staff that Eberflus had been let go.
“I just met with ‘Flus early this morning,” he said to his staff. “Incredible human being. Love the man, but at the end of the day, the football wasn’t right.

“I’ve been in this position. I’ve been ‘Flus, I’ve been the guys in this room. I understand the questions, I understand the concerns and I will answer all those. Right now, the focus has to be number one, about the man, checking on him. Reach out, tell him you love him because he’s a great man. Two, finishing this process. The exit interviews with the players are critical. We have to continue that process, so we’ve got players rolling in here in the next little bit, if anybody’s got questions, come see me.”
After Schottenheimer broke the meeting with his coaches, a montage of players entering the building to clean out their lockers and officially put a bow on the 2025 season was shown.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones also sat down and explained the decision to move on from Eberflus from his perspective.
“Our 2025 season was a roller coaster,” Jones said. “We were inconsistent on defense. The Eberflus decision, not going forward with him was one of the hardest that I’ve been involved in in my time with the Dallas Cowboys. But at the end, I think it was the thing to do.”
