As Amarillo continues to grow, many residents wish for certain new businesses to move into the city. Businesses you can already find in cities of Amarillo’s size all over Texas include Costco, which would be a great addition to Amarillo. Others in Amarillo want The Cheesecake Factory to come to Amarillo. However, the most requested store is H-E-B.

H-E-B is a Texas grocery store that began in San Antonio, and you can find H-E-B stores all over Texas except for the Texas Panhandle. The closest H-E-B is in Lubbock. The Lubbock H-E-B store opened in October 2020.

Is H-E-B moving into Amarillo?

When H-E-B finally moved into Lubbock, it was only a matter of time before it would make it to Amarillo. Wrong!  As of today, we are still patiently waiting to hear an announcement that H-E-B will be opening in Amarillo.

There was an announcement, but it wasn’t for Amarillo. It was for Lubbock. Lubbock is getting another H-E-B. The second store will be located at 5805 19th Street. The project will cost $237 million, and an additional $150 million to build the fuel station and car wash area.

H-E-B’s Lubbock Expansion and What It Means

The addition of another leads to speculation that if H-E-B is successful enough in Lubbock to open a second store, just imagine how successful H-E-B would be in Amarillo.

Here’s what is keeping H-E-B from opening in Amarillo.

H-E-B keeps its stores close to distribution centers. Currently, Amarillo is too far away from the main H-E-B distribution centers. For this reason, putting a store in Amarillo would be costly.

Another possible reason is that Amarillo isn’t growing as fast as other areas. The company tends to focus on those areas that have rapid growth. However, with the incoming businesses like Fermi, Amarillo’s major growth may happen soon.

Future Possibilities for an  Amarillo H-E-B

It is also possible that with the expansion of an additional store in Lubbock, H-E-B may be testing the waters for more expansion, and that expansion may lead to Amarillo. It’s all speculation as of now. But if they announce a distribution center expansion out of South and Central Texas, it’s on!

We’ve all heard so many rumors about how H-E-B has already secured land in Amarillo for a store, and one is coming, but until they officially announce it, it will remain a dream for many Amarillo residents.
