North Texas drivers can expect closures, detours and heavy traffic delays on Interstate 30 in downtown Dallas this weekend due to planned construction activity by the Texas Department of Transportation.
Here’s what to be on the lookout for.
According to TxDOT, all lanes of east- and westbound I-30 will be closed between the I-35E and I-45/U.S. 75 interchanges, weather permitting, as part of the ongoing I-30 Canyon corridor improvement project. Closures will be in effect starting Friday at 10 p.m. and will continue through Monday at 5 a.m.
Officials warned of significant traffic delays as a result of the closures, so if possible, they said, avoid unnecessary travel in the area. Additionally, plan ahead for longer travel time and be prepared for slower or stopped traffic.
Breaking News
There will be a signed detour rerouting drivers to the Spur 366/Woodall Rodgers Freeway as an alternate east-west connection between I-35E and I-45/US 75 during this time, according to TxDOT. Officials said any other routes could result in a longer travel distance.
This same weekend closure and detour will likely be scheduled again later this month, and officials said they will provide details once it’s finalized.
The following are additional traffic impacts also scheduled as part of this project, weather permitting, according to TxDOT officials:
All lanes of Cesar Chavez Boulevard will be closed and detoured at I-30 through late 2028.All lanes of Cadiz Street are now closed and will be detoured at I-30. This roadway will be rebuilt on a new alignment and reopen later in the project. All lanes of Akard Street will be closed and detoured at I-30 through summer 2028.Good Latimer Expressway will narrow down to one lane in each direction through early 2028.
Drivers can expect signed detours in place for the closures at Cesar Chavez Blvd., Cadiz St. and Akard St. Officials said drivers should plan ahead for additional travel time. They also warned that no pedestrians are allowed inside the closed work zones.
All of these closures are part of the $888 million I-30 Canyon project taking place between the I-35 and I-45 interchanges, according to TxDOT. The overall project is anticipated to reach completion in 2030. Upcoming planned closures for this project will be posted at www.drivetexas.org as information becomes available, officials said.
TxDOT officials are urging drivers to use caution in work zones, follow posted speed limits and be aware of slow moving traffic and working crews in the construction areas.
