AUSTIN, Texas — Waymo has expanded its Austin map beyond downtown, servicing 140 square miles of the city with self-driving cars.
Riders can now take a Waymo as far south as the Manchaca area and as far north as the Domain, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Previously, Waymo’s roughly 100 cars serviced about 90 square miles.
According to the Statesman, the expansion comes amid an ongoing competition between Waymo, which is offered through Uber and Tesla Robotaxis. In October, Tesla said its cars would soon cover over 245 square miles of Austin.
Tesla Robotaxis are not yet fully autonomous like Waymo. A human safety monitor rides in the passenger seat, but an October report from the Statesman said Tesla hoped to get rid of these monitors by the end of 2025.
