Suspect in Spring ISD student kidnapping faces new sexual abuse charge involving child

  • January 15, 2026

SPRING, Texas – Days after Johnny Ray Green was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and sexual assaulting a Spring ISD 10th grader, the 43-year-old has been charged with an additional felony.

Harris County prosecutors filed a continuous sexual abuse of a child charge against Green on Wednesday morning, records show.

The case, originally filed in 2021 and again in 2024, got dismissed both times because of a “missing witness,” according to court records.

The charges and re-filings

In new court documents obtained Wednesday, prosecutors wrote that Green sexually abused a minor for over a year between August 2018 and June 2019, then threatened to kill her if she disclosed it.

“Defendant tampered with witnesses during the original filing of this cause, procuring witnesses unavailability,” prosecutors wrote.

During the 2021 case, a jury was seated for trial in the summer of 2023, records show, but two days after jurors were selected, the case got dismissed.

In the re-filed documents, prosecutors also pointed to a 2018 injury to a child charge that got dismissed, in which he allegedly punched a 14-year-old in the chest and stomach and choked the teen while the teen tried to stop Green from hitting his mother.

“Mom wouldn’t cooperate,” records state.

Prosecutor explains dismissals can happen in these cases

In an interview with KPRC 2 Wednesday, former Harris County prosecutor and defense attorney Nathan Beedle said such decisions are not uncommon in child sexual abuse cases, because the evidence that can prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt often hinges on the testimony of one person: the victim.

“If that is the only witness to prove a certain element, and you don’t have that witness, you are not going to be able to move forward,” Beedle said.

In spite of these common complications, Beedle added that the repeated refiling of the case signals how seriously officials view these allegations against Green.

“This is the third-largest county in the country by population in the United States. They have limited resources,” he said. “They’ve gone through three different filings because they are interested in this defendant and in his conduct. They wouldn’t have done that in a lot of situations.”

Mother of victim speaks out

KPRC 2’s Bryce Newberry spoke to the mother of the child involved in Green’s new charges.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said she does not believe that Green should ever be allowed back into the public, calling him “a menace to society.”

“He needs to be locked up for good and not be released,” she said. “Or not be able to be free so that he could do this to another woman’s child.”

The mother added that Green’s abuse stripped her daughter of her innocence and has had a lasting impact.

“He took her childhood from her,” she said. “It destroyed a lot, like I don’t know what will be able to fix us.”

She also confirmed that Green’s behavior impacted the investigation, allegations that previously led Green to be charged with tampering with a witness.

“It was just a lot of confusion, and him tampering with stuff,” she said.

The attack on the Spring ISD student

In the Spring ISD case, Green allegedly picked the victim up near Dekaney High School in September and offered to help her and drive her to a police station. She reported to police that she got high in the school bathroom with friends before leaving the campus and felt too intoxicated to fight back when she encountered Green.

Instead of helping her, investigators said he drove her to his house and forced her inside, where he allegedly raped her for an hour, before driving her back to a fast-food restaurant near the campus and giving her $10 to get something to eat.

Surveillance video, license plate readers, and DNA evidence linked him to the case involving the 15-year-old student.

Green’s next court appearance

Green is expected back in court on Thursday. Harris County prosecutors have signaled they will ask a judge to hold Green without bond pending trial under the newly approved Proposition 3, but it’s not clear yet when that hearing will happen.

Beedle told KPRC 2 that the new charges could be a determining factor on whether Green is held without bond.

“Now, they have two open cases rather than just one, so the prosecutor has more information to provide the court as to why it would be appropriate to deny bond,” Beedle said.

Spring ISD Police have asked anyone with information about Green to come forward by calling 281-891-6911.
