The Grand Prairie ISD school board is set to vote Thursday night on a one-year contract extension for Superintendent Gabe Trujillo.

Trujillo has been in the district’s top job since March, after serving as superintendent of Nacogdoches ISD since 2020. Earlier in his career, he served in several administrative roles in Grand Prairie ISD, including chief of schools and area superintendent.

Trujillo returned to Grand Prairie after the board voted in December 2024 to fire Superintendent Jorge Arredondo, who had been with the district for just shy of six months. The vote split the board and upset community members. Board members didn’t offer a rationale for Arredondo’s firing, but some members previously made reference to violations of district policy related to discrimination, harassment and retaliation.

Board members discussed Trujillo’s contract at a special meeting Tuesday and took a preliminary vote to approve the extension. Thursday’s vote would finalize the extension.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Grand Prairie ISD Education Center, 2602 South Belt Line Road, Grand Prairie.
