As winter weather settles in across West Texas, Lubbock residents are feeling more than just colder temperatures. Freezing winds, and dry air can take a toll on everyday routines–and according to skincare experts, our skin is often one of the first things affected.

With cold snaps impacting much of the country, Annabelle Taurua, an expert with Fresha is sharing practical, science-backed advice that Lubbock locals can put to use right now.

Why Winter Weather Is Tough on Skin in Lubbock

Cold air holds significantly less moisture than warm air, which means skin loses hydration much faster during winter. Add in indoor heating–something many Lubbock homes rely on heavily during freezing nights–and humidity levels drop even further.

Taurua explains that frequent temperature changes can also stress the skin. Moving from cold outdoor air into warm indoor environments causes blood vessels to constrict and then rapidly expand. Over time, this can lead to redness, irritation, and even broken capillaries, especially for those with sensitive skin.

Protecting the Skin Barrier Matters Most

According to Taurua, the most important winter skincare focus is protecting the skin barrier–the outer layer that locks in moisture and keeps irritants out.

Cold temperatures and strong winds, both common on the South Plains, can weaken this barrier. When that happens, skin becomes dry, itchy, and more prone to irritation. Using products that support moisture retention is key during winter months.

She recommends moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which helps draw water into the skin, and ceramides, which help seal that moisture in.

Products to Avoid During Cold Months

One of the biggest mistakes people make during winter is continuing to use harsh cleansers designed for warmer weather.

Taurua advises avoiding foaming cleansers that contain ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate. While effective in summer when sweat and oil build up, these products strip away natural oils that skin actually needs during colder months.

Instead, switching to gentle or sensitive-skin cleansers can help maintain balance–even for those who don’t typically have sensitive skin the rest of the year.

Why Men’s Skin Can Struggle More in Winter

Men may face added challenges during winter due to regular shaving, which already disrupts the skin barrier. When cold weather damage is added to the mix, irritation becomes more likely.

Dry skin can increase razor burn, ingrown hairs, and small cuts that heal more slowly. Taurua says men should prioritize thicker moisturizers throughout winter to reduce irritation and protect skin before and after shaving.

Winter Skincare That Works for West Texas

For Lubbock residents, winter skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. Gentle cleansers, barrier-repairing moisturizers, and consistent hydration can go a long way in protecting skin through the coldest days of the season.

As temperatures fluctuate and winter weather continues, small changes to daily skincare routines can help keep skin healthier–no matter how harsh it gets outside.
