Texas football continued its late surge in the transfer portal Thursday by luring highly regarded offensive tackle Melvin Siani from Wake Forest.

Now, head coach Steve Sarkisian and offensive line coach Kyle Flood have to figure out how to get three proven tackles in Siani, returning left tackle Trevor Goosby and returning right tackle Brandon Baker all on the field.

Siani, a 6-foot-6, 302-pound rising redshirt junior from Canada, didn’t enter the portal until Thursday morning after apparently agreeing to resign with Wake Forest. He started all 13 games for the Demon Deacons this season primarily at right tackle, but the Wake Forest coaches expected him to take over at left tackle next season. He graded as the 12th-best qualified blocker in the ACC by Pro Football Focus and didn’t allow a sack while leading the offensive line in snaps played with 914.

Siani, who has two remaining years of eligibility, projects as a right tackle at Texas considering Goosby was as an All-SEC player at left tackle. Siani’s arrival likely means that the 6-foot-4, 308-pound Baker will shift inside to one of the guard spots.

Starting center Connor Robertson also returns, but the Longhorns have lost both of their starting guards to the NFL draft and four more reserve guards to the portal. Texas has also signed portal guard Dylan Sikorski from Oregon State and tackle Jonte Newman from Texas A&M. Sikorski has starting experience in the interior, but Newman seems like a long-term project considering he has four remaining seasons of eligibility.

Siani rates as the fourth-best offensive tackle in the portal by On3 Sports, but he hasn’t drawn a rating from 247Sports because of his late portal entry.

The signing of Siani likely means Texas will stop pursuing Jordan Seaton, the former Colorado star who’s rated as the top tackle in the portal.

Texas ranks as the No. 3 portal class in the nation behind No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Ole Miss, per 247Sports. The portal closes at the end of the day Friday for every school except Indiana and Miami, which play Monday for the national championship. However, schools can still sign players at any time if the players submitted their names into the portal by the deadline.
