Cops often depend on video surveillance to be their eyes when crimes go unnoticed. Did you know that, through a special program with the city, you can offer video footage from your private cameras to the Lubbock Police Department (LPD)?
What is the Lubbock SafeCam Program?
It’s called the SafeCam program and it’s LPD’s attempt at collaborating with the community to help catch suspects.

The way it works is that if you happen to record a shady individual who matches the description of who the cops are looking for on your security camera or video doorbell, you can voluntarily provide LPD with that footage to help with their investigations.
LPD emphasizes that this is not mandatory. Any submitted video footage is all voluntary and given with consent from the property owner. Lubbock cops cannot order you to turn over video footage of your private property for the sake of checking if a suspect happened to walk onto your yard.

Registering for the SafeCam program is super quick and easy. Sign-up is free and all information is kept confidential between the property owner and LPD. Once you have a camera set up and you’ve filled out the paperwork, someone from the department will reach out with the final steps—so simple!
Oh yeah, and you can opt out of the program whenever you want.
Do Cops Have Access to My Cameras Under the SafeCam Program?
This is a commonly asked question and no, you are not signing away your rights to your own video footage. All this program does is allow you the chance to provide information with your own consent.

If investigators contact you and say that your cameras may have picked up something relevant to their investigations, it is 100% your choice to voluntarily give up your property’s footage. Nobody is required to hand over videos.
If you are interested in registering for the SafeCam program and help LPD catch the bad guys, you can fill out the information on their webpage and wait for a representative to reach out. Happy filming!
