Following a stretch of mild temperatures during the week, the Houston area is expecting a cold, dry holiday weekend, accompanied by a slight chance of flurries in the northern areas.

Consistent with a recent “seesaw pattern” of cold fronts moving through the area, a front is expected to sweep across Texas and approach the Houston area Friday evening, said Hailey Bailey, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Houston-Galveston Office.

Behind that front, colder air is expected to blow in and be “unpacked” on Saturday and Sunday. Bailey said Saturday is expected to be “the colder of the days —most of the area will be in the 50s.”

At night, temperatures are expected to drop into the 30s to mid-40s range, Bailey said.

“The Saturday night into Sunday morning timeframe will be the coldest temperatures, with most of the temperatures around or below freezing,” Bailey said. “A few locations south of the I-10 corridor will inch toward that freezing mark.”

Closer to the coast, colder air will take a little longer to move in, keeping temperatures there in the mid to upper 40s, Bailey said.

There are also slight chances of precipitation, especially north of the I-10 corridor.

“We may have a few flurries, maybe some instances of sleet,” Bailey said. “But we’re not expecting any accumulation with that.”

Traveling should remain largely unaffected as forecasts do not indicate any travel issues for the Houston area.

The cooler weather is likely to diminish by Monday, just in time for Houston’s MLK Unity Parade, according to Bailey. Monday is expected to bring warmer conditions, with a few locations falling to the low 40s.
