Herrera’s Cafe #1 quietly closed on Harry Hines Boulevard in Dallas at the end of 2025.
The restaurant comes from a Dallas family who has owned Tex-Mex spots in D-FW for more than 50 years. Regular Herrera’s diner Brook Busbee called the family a “North Texas legend.”
It all started in 1971 on Maple Avenue, when mom of five Amelia Herrera opened the first Herrera’s. At least three generations of family members have continued opening restaurants across D-FW since the matriarch died.
It isn’t clear why Herrera’s on Harry Hines closed. The owner didn’t respond to repeated requests for comment.
Restaurant News
Two Herrera’s restaurants remain open but under separate ownership: Herrera’s Oak Cliff on W. Illinois Avenue and Cafe Herrera on Lamar Street in downtown Dallas.
Herrera’s on Harry Hines opened in early 2023 across from Brook Hollow Golf Club. It sold some of the dishes that made the restaurant popular in the 1970s, like the bestselling “2B” Mexican dinner: cheese enchiladas, a beef taco and rice and beans.
Busbee loved the “3B,” a plate of tamales covered with chili con carne.
“I don’t know where I’m going to get my tamales now‚” Busbee said of the closed Harry Hines restaurant. She dined at Herrera’s on its last day.

Her love for Herrera’s goes back to the ’70s, when she used to eat at the original restaurant as a student at Southern Methodist University. Another Herrera’s, on Sylvan Avenue in West Dallas, was open from 2014 to 2022.
“I’m not counting them out yet,” Busbee said of the family behind Herrera’s on Harry Hines. “I’m obviously a big fan and I want to see them resurrect it again.”
Herrera’s Cafe #1 was at 8014 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas.
