InvestigateTV+ Weekend: Blindsided by Unpaid Debts

  • January 17, 2026

(InvestigateTV) — This Week on InvestigateTV+ Weekend: Families signing nursing home paperwork later blindsided by lawsuits and massive debts. Plus, month after month, people pay for health insurance, yet some still struggle to get the coverage they’re promised.

WHERE TO WATCH ICYMI – Watch last week’s episode.

Blindsided: Across America, a growing number of consumer advocates and elder care attorneys are sounding alarms about nursing homes suing third parties for unpaid debts. Friends and relatives have found themselves facing potentially financially devastating lawsuits simply because they were present when the resident was admitted. The practice violates federal law. Two different daughters shared their stories with InvestigateTV about the lawsuits they faced because of their mothers’ unpaid bills. The ordeal took financial, emotional and physical tolls on them. The federal government is well aware of the problem and was attempting to clamp down on these illegal lawsuits – but those efforts died off earlier this year. The National Consumer Law Center is continuing to raise alarms and is warning the public not to sign admission agreements unless they have full control and access to the resident’s finances. This problem has the potential to explode as the Baby Boomers turn to nursing homes for care.

Navigating a Healthcare Denial: We count on health insurance to be there when we need it most.

But sometimes claims get denied – not because of medical reasons, but because of complex paperwork.

Cassidy Williams shows what one new mom went through and what you can do if it happens to you.

Medical Credit Cards: Medical debt is a growing burden for millions of Americans. And now, a new practice is raising concerns – patients being signed up for medical credit cards without their consent. One schoolteacher says it happened to her, and the impact hit her credit score. Susan Campbell shows how it happened – and what you need to watch for.

Watching Your Wallet – Safe at Home: When you shop online, do you know who you’re really buying from? A new report from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group says injuries from recalled products hit an eight-year high last year. In this Watching Your Wallet, Consumer Investigator Caresse Jackman talks with the consumer advocacy group about how to shop smarter and avoid hazardous products.
