Black bear sighting in East Texas: A historic wildlife moment

  • January 17, 2026

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – A rare visitor made headlines recently.

“You all are a part of history right now. This is a wonderful phenomenon happening right now,” said Reuben Gay, a district wildlife biologist for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, during a recent Texas Black Bear Alliance meeting. And he’s right—East Texas witnessed something truly remarkable last year.

The Bear’s Arrival

Beginning in July and continuing through December, a black bear made appearances across East Texas, primarily in Cherokee and Anderson County.

This was no ordinary wildlife sighting; it marked a significant moment in the region’s natural history.

The first documented sighting occurred on July 15, on a property in the area, followed quickly by a photo from a neighboring property to the north.

Based on the bear’s size and height, wildlife officials determined the animal was a male juvenile.

Where Did It Come From?

Before reaching Texas, experts believe the bear traveled from Louisiana, Arkansas, or Oklahoma.

Is It Dangerous?

One of the most pressing questions from the community: Is this bear a threat? The answer, according to Gay, is reassuring.

“This bear as of today is not dangerous,” Gay stated. “We haven’t had any serious or significant human conflicts with this bear. We’re just asking people to be bear wise—call us, go to our website, go to the bear wise website and learn about the bear’s psychology and biology and learn to live with them.”

The Search Continues

The bear could still be in East Texas. During a search and rescue operation in Cherokee County, the mayor’s office and sheriff’s department discovered fresh bear tracks just south of the 84 Bridge on the Anderson County side—evidence that the animal may not have left the region.

How to Stay Bear Safe

If you encounter a bear, the Texas Black Bear Alliance has clear guidance: respect the animal and maintain appropriate distance. Don’t harass or approach it.

“If you do see a bear, please respect it. Please give it the appropriate space,” Gay emphasized.

Additionally, if you spot a bear from a safe distance, take a photo if you can do so safely and report your sighting to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. These reports help wildlife officials track the animal’s movements and ensure the safety of both the bear and the community.

A Moment in History

This black bear sighting represents more than just an unusual wildlife encounter—it’s a window into how ecosystems are changing and how wildlife ranges are expanding.

For residents of East Texas, it’s a reminder that they’re witnessing nature in action, and everyone has a role to play in keeping both wildlife and their communities safe.
