LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Deshun Avery is a local pastor who also serves on the MLK Commemorative Council of Lubbock.
He is encouraging residents to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through community service as it hosts a variety of commemorative events.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. at Lubbock Memorial Civic Center
“We just never want to forget the sacrifice, the importance of loving others enough to where you can’t leave them where they are, that was Doctor King,” Avery said.
Avery referenced one of Dr. King’s most famous quotes, noting that the civil rights leader once said life’s most persistent and urgent question is “What are you doing for others?”
He said there will be opportunities for anyone to serve in Lubbock over the next few days.
“This message, this celebration is about the light, about joy, about still progressing,” Avery said. “So there’s no stones, there’s not trying to make anyone feel less than, it’s about reflecting, coming out and enjoying the progress people made for us,” Avery said.
Building stronger communities
In a world that can feel divided, Avery said change begins when people choose compassion and positive action.
“Strength is not gained in lifting by yourself, strength is gained when we help lift up others,” Avery said. “I truly believe that the stronger our communities will be, the stronger our nations will be, and then again, we will be able to always remember the message of hope, that I will never become what I need to be, until you become what you need to be.”
Avery said Lubbock serves as an example of communities standing united and serving one another.
“Even back in 1970’s when the tornado hit, Lubbock was able to recover, rebound, and that is what community is. Resiliency is building that ability to bounce back,” Avery said. “So, Lubbock is a fantastic place to remind people that the model works, if we all do it together.”
He said Dr. King’s dream lives on, not only in history books, but in every act of service and the love people choose to show every day.
