EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A modest group of supporters gathered outside the Montana Avenue Sheriff’s station Saturday morning for a rally dubbed the “ICE Caravan”, expressing support for local law enforcement, as well as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol Personnel.
Organized online, the event was promoted as a “peaceful car and truck train” of support.
A small convoy of vehicles covered in American flags and law enforcement symbols was positioned in a parking lot near the facility.
Attendees that spoke with KINT, emphasized the non-political nature of their demonstration.
“This event today is not about a political party. This is not about being a Republican, Democrat, or Independent,” said Megan Harris, an El Paso resident at the rally. “When it comes to law enforcement, there is a mix of beliefs and political views. but this is about who they are. At the end of the day, these are people who have families, who are residents, and are in our El Paso community.”
The local expression of solidarity with federal and local law enforcement officials comes amid ongoing national debates concerning border security and an increase in violent immigration policy being enforced around the country.
