The San Antonio Zoo is celebrating Valentine’s Day with a vengeance — but it’s for a good cause.

Instead of crying over your ex on Feb. 14, consider taking part in the zoo’s annual “Cry Me a Cockroach” Valentine’s Day fundraiser.

Heartbreak turns into philanthropy when you pay to name a cockroach, rat or vegetable after an ex or enemy you’d like to have fed to one of the zoo’s animal residents.

This year, the zoo scaled back its prices to make it more affordable to get revenge. It costs $5 to name a cockroach or veggie after your ex, while naming a rat after the rat who broke your heart costs $15.

After choosing what form your ex will take to be a zoo animal’s meal, you make a donation, complete a form and seal the deal by submitting the name of the not-so-special someone, according to the zoo’s online instructions. To participate, you must be at least 18 years old.

Beyond the symbolic sacrifice of your ex to the zoo animals, participants also get a downloadable Valentine’s Day card and a special video starring the zoo’s most popular animals.

The fan-favorite feeding frenzy can be followed on the zoo’s social media platforms, at the handle @SanAntonioZoo.

An adult-only “Naughty by Nature” VIP Tours, where guests can learn about the “spicy, surprising and downright hilarious ways wildlife finds love” is another way to embrace the holiday. Kiss-O-Grams also can be purchased if you want to send a loved one a video of a sloth, kangaroo or giraffe “booping” the camera with a kiss.

Another option for those with less hate in their hearts is the zoo’s “Wild at Heart” Valentine’s Day dining experience. Couples can enjoy a candlelight dinner, live music and dinner — and no rats, cockroaches or veggies named Brad will be on the menu.

The night begins with cocktails and appetizers on the Hippo Overlook and Patio, with food served downstairs in the Hippo Viewing Cave.

What says romance better than hippos by candlelight? The event is for lovebirds 21 years or older, with reservations required for the date night that ranges from $175 to $325 a person.
