LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s tennis team fell 7-0 to No. 20 Texas Tech (TTU) in their season opener Sunday at McLeod Tennis Center.
 
In doubles, the Vaqueros battled but dropped the doubles point. On court two, seniors Barbara Martinez and Yaiza Vazquez were in a back-and-forth set that went unfinished as the match ended at a 4-4 tie.
 
The Red Raiders jumped out to a commanding lead in singles, but the Vaqueros showed fight in some competitive sets at the top of the lineup.
 
On court one, Martinez battled in the first reaching 3-3 before falling 6-3 to Kate Dmitrichenko. Dmitrichenko would go on to win the second 6-0.
 
After dropping the first set 6-0, junior Rhea Makesar battled back in the second, pushing Mariia Hlahola, but eventually losing 6-4 on court three.
 
The Vaqueros will continue their run in Lubbock as they face Abilene Christian in a neutral-site match Monday at 11:30 a.m. Depending on weather, the match will either be held at the McLeod Tennis Center or indoors at Lubbock Country Club.
