Ranked fourth in the Associated Press Poll, Texas (18-2) is coming off back-to-back losses on the road at then-No. 12 LSU and No. 2 South Carolina. The Longhorns lost just one conference game during their SEC debut last season, and this program last dropped three straight conference games during the 2021-22 season.
Meanwhile, a Texas A&M team that hasn’t played in a week has an overall record of 8-5 with a 1-3 mark in its conference contests. Texas A&M is 12-37 in SEC play since legendary coach Gary Blair retired following the 2021-22 season.

Texas coach Vic Schaefer will forever be linked with today’s guests at Moody Center. Schaefer worked on Gary Blair’s coaching staff in College Station from 2003-12, and the Aggies won a national championship in 2011 with Schaefer on the bench and current UT assistant coach Sydney Carter in the starting lineup.
Schaefer is also a Texas A&M graduate who earned a kinesiology degree in 1984. That means that Schaefer has an Aggie Ring, a celebratory piece of jewelry that he sometimes wore around the Texas campus after moving to Austin in 2020. Schaefer, though, shared this week that his ring has been put away.
“I probably haven’t worn that in a while,” Schaefer explained on Saturday. “It kind of got brought up several times with certain (Texas) administrators. I didn’t bring it up, but at some point it occurred to me, it obviously bothers people so it’s no problem. I’ve taken it off. To be quite honest, I don’t even know if I could get it back on my fingers. It’s not that I’ve gained weight, but my fingers have.”
Since he was hired by Texas, Schaefer is 2-1 against his alma mater. Texas A&M handed Schaefer his first-ever loss with the Longhorns in 2020, but his team has won the last two matchups in the Lone Star Showdown.
