MEN’S HOOPS: Texas A&M rides hot 2nd half to take Lone Star Showdown over Texas 74-70
Texas’ defense swarmed the Aggies, forcing them to shoot 17.2% from the field, 10-for-58. The Longhorns shot 33-for-77, but made just 1 out of 18 3-point attempts. Ashton Judd hit Texas’ lone long-distance bucket with 36 seconds left in the game.
It’s the second consecutive game that the Aggies have lost a Southeastern Conference game by at least 40 points. Seventh-ranked Vanderbilt beat them 91-51 on Jan. 11 in College Station.
It was a tale of two halves for Texas. They looked a step slow on offense in the first half, yet still built a 34-24 lead by halftime, thanks to their typical defensive effort. Texas forced the Aggies into five 5-second inbound violations, one 10-second backcourt violation and a shot clock violation throughout the game with sticky defending. Had the Longhorns been able to hit shots with any consistency in the first half, the game could have really gotten out of hand.

Aaliyah Crump led the Longhorns with 12 points in her first action in about two months after recovering from a foot injury. Kyla Oldacre posted another double-double with 10 points and 18 rebounds, her fourth of the season. Madison Booker and Rori Harmon each chipped in 10 points, and Booker had six assists.

Texas outscored the Aggies 48-10 in the paint and 17-6 on fastbreaks. With 10 Longhorns scoring in the game, their bench outscored Texas A&M’s 43-5.
For the Aggies, Janae Kent scored 16 points on 5-for-12 shooting. She’s the younger sister of former Longhorns men’s player Jayson Kent.
