LUBBOCK, Texas (KFDA) – Both West Texas A&M track and field teams headed down south to Lubbock this past weekend to compete in the Corky Classic, and both teams had a great showing as the indoor season continues.
Men’s results
On the men’s side, Friona alum Adrian Legarreta was the big winner. The senior took first in the mile with a time of 4:09.86.
His teammates, junior Fintan Kavanagh and senior Branch Cox, placed seventh and eighth in the mile respectively with times of 4:16.10 and 4:16.72.
In the sprint category, James Dadzie and Issac Botsio were neck and neck in the 60-meter dash. Dadzie finished just milliseconds before Botsio to place fourth with a time of 6.623 seconds, while Botsio came fifth at 6.63 seconds.

On the women’s side, plenty of athletes placed in the top-10.
Blessing Akintoye came in second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.22 seconds, and Abigail Abugire came in second in the mile at 4:57.50.
Both women were in the 4×400-meter relay event alongside Sandra Appiah and Asana Hamidu. The relay team placed sixth while also breaking a school record in the event with a time of 3:39.15.
Kalkidan Vincendeau placed third in the mile right behind Abugire with a time of 4:57.74, while Sarah Koomson placed fifth at 4:58.85 and Naomi Addo came seventh at 4:59.27.
Hamidu made school history again after coming third in the 600-yard dash, breaking the school record with a time of 1:20.29.
In the field events, Borger alum Hope Gray came sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 16.81 meters.
Esther Conde-Turpin came seventh in the long jump with a distance of 6.01 meters and tied for seventh in the high jump at 1.66 meters.

Both teams will be back in action Jan. 30, where they will travel to Albuquerque to compete at the New Mexico Team Open for a two-day event and then will be back at the same event one week later.
