HOUSTON – Members of Houston’s Iranian community gathered in the Galleria area along Post Oak Boulevard on Sunday, joining a wave of protests against the Iranian regime while expressing growing concern over a digital blackout that has left many unable to contact family members in Iran.
The demonstration comes amid intensifying protests in Iran that human rights groups say have resulted in thousands of deaths. Local protesters joined the global calls for regime change while highlighting the communication challenges facing those with family still in Iran.
“There’s absolute digital blackout inside Iran, so millions of innocent Iranians have been protesting and they’ve been killed by the regime,” said one Iranian woman at the protest, who still has family in Iran but has been unable to contact them. “And what they’ve been chanting says it all. They’ve been chanting for the regime changes.”
The Houston protest is part of a larger movement that has seen thousands take to the streets in recent weeks.
Human rights organizations continue to monitor the situation in Iran, where thousands are believed to have been killed during the government’s response to widespread protests. The digital blackout, including internet and phone shutdowns, has made it increasingly difficult to verify exact numbers and maintain contact with those inside the country.
