Rising living costs were a central topic in Washington this week as Congressman Jodey Arrington, who represents Texas’ 19th Congressional District, including Lubbock, spoke publicly about a proposal he calls “Reconciliation 2.0.” Arrington said the initiative is focused on addressing affordability and economic conditions for working families.

Arrington made the remarks during a press conference with the Republican Study Committee, where he outlined support for a second budget reconciliation bill. According to Arrington, the proposal is intended to encourage economic growth and address what he described as negative economic impacts from policies enacted over the past several years.

During his comments, Arrington attributed rising costs to federal spending levels, expanded government programs, and energy-related regulations. He stated that these factors have contributed to higher expenses for households, including increases in grocery prices, housing costs, and mortgage payments.

Affordability and Economic Indicators

Arrington emphasized affordability as a key concern, citing mortgage cost data as an example. He said average monthly mortgage payments increased by approximately $1,000 during the previous administration and have since declined by about $200 following recent policy changes.

He also referenced several economic indicators that he said reflect improvement, including:

Increases in real wages relative to inflation

Declining interest rates

Growth in business investment

Recent economic growth measured at 4.3 percent

Arrington stated that these trends support the argument that policy decisions influence economic outcomes.

Focus Areas of Reconciliation 2.0

According to Arrington, Reconciliation 2.0 would prioritize several policy areas, including:

Reducing health care costs

Codifying elements of President Trump’s trade policies

Addressing waste, fraud, and abuse in federal programs

He also discussed issues such as border security, enforcement of existing laws, and foreign policy approaches, describing them as part of a broader national strategy.

Relevance for West Texas

Arrington characterized the proposal as focused on household financial stability, including the ability to manage expenses and plan for the future. He referenced historical poverty rate data from the first Trump administration and said he believes similar policy approaches could help address current economic challenges.

Arrington stated that economic growth benefits broadly across communities and reiterated his view that policy decisions made at the federal level directly affect local costs, including fuel, food, and housing.

He concluded that Reconciliation 2.0 is intended to address those impacts by advancing policies aimed at affordability and economic growth.
