AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A prolonged stretch of temperatures below freezing is expected to settle into the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles late this week and into the weekend, bringing bone-chilling wind chills below zero degrees and periods of light snow.

Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing from very early Friday through at least Sunday morning, marking the coldest stretch so far this winter for the area. Daytime highs will struggle to climb out of the 20s and lower 30s, with overnight lows falling into the single digits and teens.
Strong north winds will make it feel even colder. Wind chill values may drop into the single digits and below zero at times, especially during the overnight and early morning hours Friday into Saturday. These conditions can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes and hypothermia if not dressed adequately for the frigid conditions.
Snow is also in the forecast, beginning Friday night and continuing through the day Saturday.
While periods of snow could impact travel, accumulations are expected to remain on the lighter side. But even light snowfall, combined with cold temperatures, could create slick road conditions.

How to Prepare for the Cold:
Protect pipes: Insulate exposed pipes and allow faucets to drip during the coldest periods.Dress for the cold: Wear layers, hats and gloves. Limit time outdoors due to dangerous wind chills.Prepare vehicles: Keep fuel tanks at least half full and carry a winter emergency kit.Care for pets and livestock: Bring pets indoors and ensure animals have shelter and unfrozen water.Check on others: Look in on elderly neighbors and those without adequate heat.Comment with Bubbles
