If you or your children have played football, baseball, t-ball, softball, volleyball or basketball on a team for the Spring Valley Athletic Association over the past 58 years, you already know the life-changing benefits of participating in recreational athletics. Hundreds of teams and thousands of young players signed up last year to play one or more sports for the SVAA, where there are no tryouts and no recruiting. More than 500 adult volunteers give their time and talents to help players experience athletics with kids from around their neighborhood and across Richardson ISD and North Dallas.
Last year, the SVAA created a college scholarship fund and awarded grants to six deserving seniors totaling $14,000. This year, they’ve set the ambitious goal of awarding up to 20 scholarships worth $60,000, and they’re determined to meet their mark.
“SVAA is such a great organization that is giving back to the community,” said SVAA board member Brian Slye, who noted that more than 5,400 students played basketball alone this season — nearly double the amount from only four years ago.
Applicants should be high school seniors who participated in SVAA programs and are pursuing a college degree. Funds may be used for college tuition, fees and/or related educational expenses. The deadline is April 15. You may apply online here.
