Texas A&M’s 2025 football season is a little over seven months away, but that hasn’t stopped several media outlets, including USA TODAY Sports and On3, from releasing their early preseason Top 25 rankings before Indiana and Miami face off in the National Title Game on Monday night.

After landing 17 players from the transfer portal, headlined by Alabama star wide receiver Isaiah Horton, and incoming senior Northwestern transfer edge Anto Saka, head coach Mike Elko and his staff have addressed every position group outside of quarterback and running back, trusting the depth at both positions.

However, even though the portal is closed, the remaining uncommitted players will have plenty of time to make their decisions, which could include Texas A&M, as Elko has not vocally stated that, nor has it been reported and confirmed that the Aggies are finished adding transfers.

Preseason rankings in the age of the transfer portal are based more on past results and assumptions regarding the level of talent each team will possess after filling out its roster. For the Aggies, landing at No. 8 in USA TODAY’s preseason rankings is surprising to some, given the number of veteran starters that have declared for the 2026 NFL Draft, paired with more than a dozen transfer losses.

Well, On3’s preseason Top 25 nearly matches USA TODAY’s, placing the Aggies at No. 8, making them the third highest ranked SEC team behind Georgia (No. 2) and Texas (No. 3). Again, this ranking is mainly based on starting quarterback Marcel Reed and star wide receiver Mario Craver returning next season, paried with a deep secondary, rebuilt defensive line, and an offensive line that will feature four new, yet experienced starters.

While the 2026 schedule is tough, featuring road games against LSU, Missouri, Alabama, South Carolina, and Oklahoma, Marcel Reed should take another step forward as a pocket passer, while the Aggie run defense, which directly led to the program’s lone losses to Texas and Miami, should vastly improve, especially after landing Tulsa transfer linebacker Ray Coney.
