LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – It’s a cold start to the holiday morning, and that chill is about to deepen.
Expect cooler-than-normal temperatures today thanks to a cold front. Once the front moves through, winds shift east-northeast and get brisk, pulling in colder air in from the north.

At the same time cloud cover will increase, which limits how much warming we will get during the day.

That combination will keep highs only reaching the upper 30s to mid 40s this afternoon.
Tonight, the front exits, winds relax, and clouds clear which will drop overnight lows into the teens.

Tuesday through Thursday our overall pattern doesn’t change much. Temperatures will remain near normal and dry.
However, things might get interesting as we move Friday into the weekend.
Right now, a stubborn upper-level low over Canada has been blocking Arctic air from moving south. Late this week, that will begin to break down delivering a surge of cold air down south and a sharp drop in temperatures for the South Plains.

At the same time, a storm system in our west will move closer to us. As it approaches, winds higher up in the atmosphere turn southwesterly and pull in moisture.
If that moisture moves in while the cold air is still in place, it can ride up and over the colder air at the surface.

This set up CAN lead to wintry precipitation. BUT there is still a lot of uncertainty in this forecast. Right now, the models disagree on the timing, strength, and track of the incoming storm system.
