Key Point

Eagle Pass is the most affordable place to retire in Texas—and the country, according to U.S. News & World Report. Overall, Texas dominated the top 10 most affordable places to retire with seven destinations.

If your retirement plans involve moving to Texas, you have options for where to plant your roots. From the Dallas suburbs and the gorgeous Hill Country to the Texas Gulf Coast, the Lone Star State has something for every lifestyle and preference.

However, if you’re prioritizing affordability in this next chapter of your life, you’ll need to narrow down your options even further. Recently, U.S. News & World Report compiled a ranking of the cheapest cities and towns for Americans to retire in 2025 and 2026, and a small city in Texas took the top spot. Based on annual housing costs for mortgage-paying homeowners and median gross rent, Eagle Pass is officially the No. 1 place in Texas—and the country—for retirees to live well on a budget.

Eagle Pass, located along the Rio Grande River in Maverick County, has a population of just under 29,000. The median home value in the town is $185,037, while the median monthly rent is $632. Best Places reports that the cost of living in Eagle Pass is 20.4 percent lower than the national average, and the median household income is $58,119.

But it’s not just the hard numbers that make life in Eagle Pass appealing to retirees. It’s also home to a golf course, a lake for fishing, walking, biking, and enjoying the great outdoors. In 2025, Investopedia and Travel + Leisure also named Eagle Pass one of the best places to retire in the Southwest for lower taxes, quality health care, and an affordable cost of living. (Texas has no state income tax, so retirement income, including Social Security, is tax-free at the state level.)

If you’re not totally sold on Eagle Pass, the Lone Star State dominated the top 10 most affordable places to retire with six more destinations. Harlingen, which is just 30 miles west of the Gulf of Mexico, ranked No. 4 with a median household income of $56,134 and a median home value of $155,614. And Mission, home to La Lomita Historical Park, is fifth with a median house value of $185,399 and a median monthly rent of $777.
