With snow expected in the Dallas area on Saturday and with the forecast calling for a chance of freezing rain and icy conditions on Friday night, many schools around D-FW are moving their games from Friday to Thursday.
A UIL rule change allows teams to move their games up a day because of inclement weather.
Beginning next school year, the UIL will allow teams to play every two days, so schools could schedule their basketball games on Monday and Wednesday or on Tuesday and Thursday if they didn’t want to stick with the traditional Tuesday and Friday schedule that is currently used, especially for district games. That rule will be for all circumstances next season, but this season the UIL is allowing schools to move up their game by a day if there is bad weather.
“In the past, they couldn’t move them up to Thursday,” North Crowley boys coach Tommy Brakel said. “The UIL always said you can’t play two games in a school week, so if you played on Tuesday, you couldn’t play your second game of the week until after the last day of school of that school week. I don’t even know if you could move it up before even school was out [on a Friday]. If you couldn’t get it in on Friday you had to do it on Saturday and if you couldn’t get it in on Saturday, then it had to be on the next [school] day, Monday.”

Brakel said his school will take a hard look at the forecast on Wednesday before deciding what to do. Dallas ISD hopes to have a plan for its schools by the end of the day Tuesday.
All District 5-6A games have been moved to Thursday, with the same game times. The same goes for all games in District 6-6A, District 6-5A, District 9-5A, District 11-5A and District 12-5A.
