Four Dallas police officers are on leave after authorities said they shot a man in the leg after an altercation that began in an east Oak Cliff backyard spilled into the neighborhood over the weekend.

Investigations by police and the Dallas County district attorney’s office are underway. The department on Tuesday released additional details about the shooting — the city’s first police shooting this year — and released edited clips of audio from the initial 911 call and the officers’ body-worn and dashboard-camera footage.

The clips of the Saturday afternoon shooting in the 1200 block of Presidio Avenue show officers repeatedly ordering the man to drop the two handguns he was holding — one in each hand — for about a minute. Police said he did not comply and raised the guns, prompting the officers to open fire.

“The officers did everything they needed to do to keep everybody safe in Dallas and everyone in that area,” Chief Daniel Comeaux said during a news conference at Jack Evans Police Headquarters.

Police identified the man as Oscar Saldana, 31. Comeaux said Saldana was taken to a hospital in stable condition and would be booked into jail on an aggravated-assault family-violence charge once he is medically cleared.

Attempts to reach Saldana for comment Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful. It was not clear whether he had an attorney.

Putting officers involved in a shooting on administrative leave during an investigation is standard practice. The officers were identified as Eric Aranda, Jose Argueta Jr., Charles Jones and Michael Gonzalez.

In the 911 audio released by the department, the caller identifies himself as Saldana’s brother. The clip includes what sounds like two gunshots, and the caller tells the dispatcher that Saldana had been asked to leave the home before he retrieved a gun and fired into the ground.

Before officers shot Saldana, another person at the scene fired a weapon into the ground — an act investigators concluded was done in self-defense, Comeaux said. Police did not identify that person but said the person and Saldana knew each other.

Lt. Bobby Adkison, who works in the Special Investigations Unit, said the department’s finding was based on responding officers seeing Saldana was armed as they arrived and acting as the aggressor.

Comeaux did not say how many rounds officers fired. He said that information was not available as the investigation is ongoing. He said Saldana was hit twice.
