DPS provides winter weather tips

  • January 21, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texans can take several important safety steps tonight to prepare for incoming winter weather and arctic cold conditions.

Homeowners should insulate outside pipes and faucets to prevent freezing and potential bursting. Furnaces, heaters and fireplaces should be clean and well ventilated before use.

Space heaters require special attention for fire safety. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from walls and anything that can burn, including furniture, bedding and curtains. Turn space heaters off when leaving the room.

Check that fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly before relying on heating systems.

Safety officials warn against running generators inside homes, garages or shops due to carbon monoxide risks. Residents should also avoid using cooking stoves to heat kitchens, as this creates fire and carbon monoxide hazards.

The Texas Highway Patrol urges residents to prepare vehicles now for the blast of arctic cold. The Department of Public Safety suggests checking vehicle batteries, fluids, tires and locks, and filling up gas tanks.

Drivers should assemble emergency kits with food, water, chargers and first aid supplies.

If travel becomes necessary, drivers should give themselves extra time and extra space on roadways.
