Lonesome Dove traveling exhibition to open at Buddy Holly Center

  • January 21, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Buddy Holly Center is pleased to announce the opening of the Lonesome Dove Traveling Exhibition on January 23, 2026.

Based on Larry McMurtry’s celebrated novel, Lonesome Dove tells the story of two aging Texas Rangers who drive a herd of cattle 2,500 miles from the Rio Grande to Montana to establish the first ranch there. The novel captured the public imagination upon its release and continues to resonate with audiences today. The acclaimed 1989 CBS miniseries adaptation introduced the epic Western tale to an even broader audience.

The Lonesome Dove exhibition presents classic images taken during the filming of the miniseries by Bill Wittliff, renowned photographer, writer, and executive producer (with Suzanne De Passe). Far from ordinary production stills, the photographs capture the sweeping visual imagery of the series and reflect a compelling union of art, literature, and history.

This traveling exhibition is produced by The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University and is presented in partnership with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The exhibition will be on display at the Buddy Holly Center January 23 – March 22, 2026.
