LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Officers responded to the area near 18th St. and Ave. U around 9:30 p.m. Monday night for a report of a domestic disturbance, Lubbock Police Department officials said. When an officer arrived, the suspect, Floyd-Sutton, ran and ignored commands from officers to stop.
Floyd-Sutton was chased into a nearby parking lot, where police say he drew a handgun and turned to the officer, prompting the officer to shoot him.
Investigation ongoing
Police Chief Seth Herman said transparency with the community will continue to be a top priority as the investigation continues.
“I will say it’s paramount, ensuring we have the utmost faith from our citizens to know we’re doing the right thing and our officers, just like this officer did are serving and protecting in the capacity required and placing their lives on the live everyday and every night for our protection and as you can see right here, this is what our officers face,” Herman said.
Staying prepared for any call
Herman said the department stays prepared for calls like this, with all officers going through regular training to best serve and protect.
“I’ve been doing this for 34 years and I go through multiple training events every year to ensure that I can handle situations like this like a first year officer,” Herman said. “This is an ongoing evaluation process of our officers, our techniques, and evolution in how we handle situations, we have to stay on top of it,.”
Floyd-Sutton was transported to UMC and remains in critical condition. He was arrested for aggravated assault of a public servant with his bond set at $200,000.
An investigation is underway by the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit as well as an internal department investigation.
