LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The City of Lubbock Code Administration Department is reminding residents and businesses about winter irrigation ordinances as subfreezing temperatures approach.
Code enforcement field officers are monitoring homes and businesses for sprinkler use during subfreezing weather.
Water use that causes runoff onto roadways or sidewalks can create unsafe conditions for motorists and pedestrians.
Two city ordinances address sprinkler use during freezing weather conditions.
Irrigation ordinance violations
Chapter 22: Utilities 22.03.133(b)(2) states a person commits an offense if they knowingly or recklessly operate a lawn or landscape irrigation system that irrigates during periods of freezing weather or during precipitation events.
The second ordinance, Chapter 39: Unified Development Code Section 39.01.008, addresses public nuisances. The code prohibits uses that would be injurious to neighborhood residents or interfere with reasonable property enjoyment due to water spray or conditions that amount to a public nuisance.
Citizens with private water wells are exempt from the irrigation ordinance but must still follow the nuisances ordinance.
Residents can report violations using the MyLBK app at mylubbock.us/app.
