AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Pets Alive! is seeking fosters to keep furry friends safe amid freezing weekend weather.

In a joint Instagram post with Austin Monthly, the nonprofit asked Austin residents to pick up a foster dog from Town Lake Animal Center on 1156 W Cesar Chavez St. Pickups are happening now through Friday from noon to 6 p.m., and fosters will need to keep the dogs until Wednesday, Jan. 28.

A total of 75 dogs need warm homes “while regional shelters continue to deal with overcrowding and closed intake,” according to the post.

Those who cannot foster can instead donate supplies such as dog crates, baby gates, dog chews and dog toys.

Austin Pets Alive! also provided Austin Monthly with a list of cold weather tips for pet owners, including bringing pets inside, making an enclosure for community cats, adding blankets for extra warmth and knocking on car hoods to check for cats seeking shelter.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Austin on Wednesday afternoon, warning residents of potential ice and sleet. Temperatures are expected to hit around 39 degrees Friday night with a high of 42 degrees and low of 19 degrees on Saturday. Sunday will have similar temperatures.
