AUSTIN (KXAN) — Preparations are underway across Central Texas as freezing temperatures are expected to hit this weekend.

In Blanco County, the Round Mountain Volunteer Fire Department is prepping as well. They will assist the county and local municipalities by adding a few extra bodies to respond to emergencies.

Winter Storm Watches for Central Texas ahead of storm

Round Mountain Volunteer Fire Chief Jeff Open said in the past when roads get icy they see people sliding off the road or rollovers.

“We will respond to those and perform vehicle extrications, we will get people out of their vehicles and warm them up,” said Open.

The crew is made up of 15 volunteers; some firefighters and EMS trainees patrol about 250 square miles of northern Blanco County.

The Williamson County Office of Emergency Management said it’s also preparing for the weekend.

“We are having regular calls with all our partners, both other counties and municipalities within the county,” said Bruce Clements Director of Williamson County OEM.

Working together is a must in these weather events, that’s why days before bad weather hit they are coordinating with other agencies and departments to make sure everyone is on the same page.

While heavily used interstates and roadways might be treated before ice hits, you should try hard to stay off the roads.

Always avoid bridges and overpasses when the roads freeze as they can freeze faster and easier than the roads that aren’t elevated.

Stay informed and make sure to check on your neighbors who are elderly or those who might have a disability.
