Shortly after 9:20 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to the 10800 block of McCombs on a two-vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers on scene requested the assistance of crash investigators, who then took over the investigation.

The preliminary investigation revealed that 31-year-old Arnoldo Vargas was traveling in an SUV south on McCombs but failed to stay in his lane and crossed the raised median onto the northbound lanes. The SUV struck a BMW head-on, which was unable to swerve out of the way, according to EPPD.

Vargas was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the day after, he died at the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.

This is the second fatality of 2026 compared to three this time last year. No seatbelt on behalf of Vargas is a contributing factor in this fatality, according to EPPD.
