WINSTON-SALEM – Sophomore Rafael Ymer picked up a ranked singles win Wednesday as the Elon men’s tennis team (1-2) fell in a 6-1 decision against No. 11 Texas A&M (3-0) at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Ymer delivered Elon’s second ranked win of the spring and the first in singles, defeating Alexander Frusina, who is No. 73 in the current ITA rankings. The sophomore delivered a 6-4, 6-4 victory for Elon’s lone point of the contest.
The match was second straight for the Phoenix to come against a top-20 ranked opponent after playing No. 17 Duke last week. Elon finished with six victorious singles sets across the two contests.
The Rundown
The Aggies won the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots.
Veljko Krstic and Nikola Parichkov went up an early break against Theo Papamalamis and Togan Tokac on Court 1 and led 4-3 when their doubles match was abandoned.
Texas A&M won five of the six singles contests to secure the match victory.
Ymer’s singles win came at the No. 2 spot, defeating Frusina in straight sets for his second victory of the spring. He broke in the ninth game of the first set before consolidating with a hold to win it, 6-4. Another 6-4 triumph in the second set secured the win and put the Phoenix on the board.
Ymer’s ranked win was the second this spring for the Phoenix. Krstic and Parichkov knocked off the No. 70 ranked doubles team of Othman Bezzaz and Ernesto Ruy from Saint Joseph’s on Jan. 10.
Parichkov rallied from 1-4 down in the opening set on Court 3 against Khololwan Montsi, the No. 112 ranked ITA singles player, to force a tiebreak. However, Montsi won the breaker, 7-5, before closing out the match with a second-set victory.
Krstic also played a tight affair at the No. 1 spot, falling just short against Papamalamis, 4-6, 4-6.
Jack Curtis won the opening set of his match at the No. 5 spot against Tiago Pires, 7-5, but Pires rallied to win the next two sets and secure a win for Texas A&M.
Both of Elon’s losses this season have come against top 20 opponents.
