GLADEWATER, Texas (KLTV) – The Union Grove school district is mourning the loss of a legendary coach.
Coach Glyn Johnston died on Monday at the age of 94, according to Union Grove ISD. Johnston attended school at Union Grove, graduating in 1948.
After his own college football career, including playing in the Tangerine Bowl, Johnston returned to Union Grove to raise his family and share his love of football as a coach and teacher, a post by the district said.
Johnston even taught driver’s ed after hours, they added. After his retirement in 1986, he returned to the district to drive a bus from 2004 to 2009.
In his last years, the district shared, Coach Johnston lived a not-so-quiet life right across the street from Union Grove High School and football Stadium, which was named Glyn Johnston Stadium after him. For many years he never missed a home game.
The district said they will never forget Johnston and all he did for the kids who he made an impact on.
Funeral services will be held on January 28 at Croley Funeral Home.
