Houston City Council approved an interlocal agreement with the Memorial Heights Redevelopment Authority in early January for the design and construction of the Waugh Drive and Heights Boulevard Improvements Project.
About the project
The project consists of intersection safety improvements at Waugh Drive and Feagan Street, as well as South Heights Boulevard and the intersection of Feagan Street/Willa Street. Improvements will consist of the installation of traffic signals, crosswalks, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps and improvements to the pavement markings and signage for the existing lane merge south of the intersections, according to the agenda item.
Sherry Weesner, president of the Memorial Heights Redevelopment Authority, said on Jan. 21 that the project is currently being advertised for bids, and while there is no specific construction start date, the authority anticipates that the project will start by the third quarter of 2026. The third quarter encompasses anywhere between July 1 and Sept. 30.
Weesner said the approximately $1.4 million project is being paid through Highway Safety Improvement Program grant funds, a federal aid program aimed at helping reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads, and local tax increment reinvestment zone funding.
