SAN ANTONIO – The suspect who was shot by a police officer during an alleged storage unit robbery has been identified.
On Monday, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) identified the suspect who was shot by the officer as 58-year-old Richard Allen Asbell.

Police say that Just before 10 p.m. on Friday, they responded to the scene of a reported Burglary in Progress at a storage facility at the corner of Fredericksburg and Hamilton Wolfe.
According to the official preliminary report, officers arrived and found a male suspect, later identified as Asbell, located inside one of the storsge units.
Officers allege that once they confrinted the suspect, he opened fire on the officers with a handgun.
A probationary officer with less than one year of service, identified as Officer Aaron Herrera, returned fire, striking the suspect.
None of the officers were injured in the gunfire, and the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
Officer Aaron Herrera will be placed on administrative leave until further notice, according to SAPD.
The SAPD Shooting Team and the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct separate but concurrent inquiries.
Their findings will be forwarded to the Bexar County District Attorney’s office for an independent review.
