LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Some Lubbock families have no heat as dangerously cold weather approaches, and they say it’s not the first time.
Ida Bosque and Maria Tucker say their power has been out since Wednesday morning. The women live at a mobile home park near the Lubbock airport.
They own their homes but rent the lot from Thunder Sun Homes. Rent includes utilities, but tenants say Thunder Sun hasn’t been paying the electric company, leaving them in the dark.
Pattern of power outages
Last summer, the same thing happened. Bosque remembers sleeping on her porch because it was so hot inside. Tucker has a 14-year-old son and slept in her car for a month.
“He had to go stay with his dad for that month that I was in my car,” Tucker said.
Now they’re without power again, this time facing dangerously cold weather.
Three companies provide electricity at the mobile home park: Reliant, Ambit and Mi Texas. Ambit and Mi Texas customers are without power.
Utility company response
Lubbock Power and Light sent a statement saying “Before any actions were taken on behalf of chosen reps, public notices were posted notifying tenants that action was going to be taken on behalf of the rep.”
LP&L says the retail provider decides to disconnect for nonpayment. LP&L carries out that order.
Legal Aid of Northwest Texas is working with tenants on their legal options. Warming centers are available for residents.
Thunder Sun Homes, Ambit and MI Texas were contacted for comment.
An emergency warming center can be opened and operated when the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts temperatures at 25 degrees or below, an inch or more of snow, temperatures below 32 degrees with an inch of driving rain, severe wind chills or extreme temperature fluctuations.
All library branches will serve as warming centers during their normal operating hours – starting Friday at noon – offering water, free Wi-Fi and charging stations for anyone needing to safely get out of the cold.
