A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for North Texas beginning at 6 p.m. on January 23. The City of Plano provides a wealth of winter preparedness tips and resources.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for North Texas beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 23, and continuing until 12:00 pm Sunday, January 25, 2026. In addition, an Extreme Cold Warning will extend from January 24 to January 26, 2026. Temperatures are forecasted to drop into the 30s tonight, with lows in the 20s and single-digits forecasted for Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Freezing rain, sleet, and snow are all possible.
The City of Plano website provides a wealth of winter preparedness tips and resources, including basic checklists for people, pets, vehicle, and home preparation:
Prepare yourself: Dress in layers, cover exposed skin, limit outdoor time, and check on family. Your outermost piece of clothing should be able to block or cut the wind. A porous covering such as a sweatshirt or jacket without a barrier does not work against the wind.
Prepare your vehicle: Keep your car’s gas tank half full, add some blankets to your car, maintain tire pressure, pack a safety kit, notify family when traveling, and use caution if the car is left running.Â
Prepare your pets: Limit outdoor time, bring outdoor pets inside, cover and check paws, check water and food, and provide shelter.
Prepare your home: Drip faucets slowly, monitor your furnace, and use caution with your heater.
The City also provides a step-by-step list for preparing outdoor faucets and pipes:
Cover outdoor faucets and wrap exposed pipes in rags and secure them with bungee cords or zip ties.
Turn off your sprinkler. If your system has a main shut-off valve, you can turn off the water supply there as well. Wrap exposed pipe with insulation to prevent a cracked or busted valve.Â
Drain and store your hose indoors.
Additional, water, power, gas, and home maintenance tips for winter preparedness are also provided on the site, as well as links to a variety of helpful resources.
