The student is facing disciplinary actions from RISD, as well as potential legal consequences under Texas state law, officials say.

GARLAND, Texas — A weapon was found in a child’s backpack at Big Springs Elementary School in Garland Thursday, officials say. 

The Richardson ISD school was briefly put on a lockdown as the staff member who secured the gun, notified campus security, confirmed a note sent to parents from the district. 

Garland Police responded and arrested the student. Richardson ISD is working closely with law enforcement on the investigation. 

The student is facing disciplinary actions from RISD, as well as potential legal consequences under Texas state law, officials say.  

“The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we take all situations of this nature very seriously,” says Richardson ISD officials. 

Starting Friday, the school district is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of students and staff: 

All fifth and sixth-grade students, regardless of their homeroom, will undergo daily metal detector wand checks starting tomorrow and continuing through next week.For the remainder of the school year, we will conduct weekly random wanding for all fifth and sixth-grade students.Increased security presence on campus through the end of next week, including a marked security vehicle stationed at the front of the school.

Richardson ISD says these steps are being taken out of an abundance of caution and there is no immediate threat to the school.
