For the handful of college basketball teams that make a deep run into the NCAA Tournament, there will be one less thing to worry about during March Madness.

The NCAA approved a new, shorter transfer window last week that will eliminate in-season portal declarations. The men’s basketball transfer window will open from April 7-21, and the women’s window will open from April 6-20. Players must submit their name in the portal in that timeframe, which is a change from previous seasons, when the portal opened for 30 days after the start of the second round of the NCAA basketball tournaments.

The men’s and women’s fields for this season’s NCAA tournaments will be revealed March 15. The men’s Final Four runs from April 4-6; the women’s Final Four is April 3-5.

Additionally, a 15-day window to enter the transfer portal will start five days after a school announces a new head coach. If a school hasn’t hired a new coach within 30 days of the previous head coach’s departure, and the 31st day is after the national championship game, a 15-day window will open, too.

Like the majority of college coaches, Texas men’s basketball coach Sean Miller supported the switch of the portal dates as well as the shorter window.

“I think it’s good that it begins after championship Monday,” Miller said. “The focus should always be on the season. Our team (and) each of our players grow up watching March Madness, hoping to have the opportunity to participate. And there really shouldn’t be anything that’s taking away from that opportunity. If you’re in one of those special programs teams that can make a run to a Final Four or compete for a national championship, all the attention should be about that one singular thing.”

Miller also likes the shortening of the portal window. It can clarify how a coach approaches his roster construction for the following season, and it can help a player quickly settle in with a new program, Miller said.

“I think shrinking the days just makes decision-making more important for both players and coaches,” he said. “I don’t think we needed to make that any longer than it needed to be. It just confuses everybody.”

The Longhorns (11-8, 2-4 SEC) average 86.0 points a game, the highest mark for the program since the 1994-95 Texas team averaged 92.9 points a contest during the heyday of the Runnin’ Horns era under former coach Tom Penders. From the 1988-89 season through 1995, Texas averaged more than 90 points per game five times and never averaged less than 81 points a contest.

In comparison, Georgia (16-3, 4-2) leads the nation with 94.8 points per game. If the Bulldogs keep up that pace, their scoring average would shatter the program’s previous high of 82.7 points a game set in 1989-90.

But who can get the critical stops? Texas ranks eighth in the SEC by allowing opponents to score 74.9 points a game and ninth in opponent’s field-goal percentage at 42.7 while Georgia has given up 84.5 points a game in conference play.
