Gov. Greg Abbott has endorsed Nate Sheets in the Republican primary for Texas agriculture commissioner, breaking with incumbent Sid Miller in a rare intraparty clash.

Abbott said on social media he is backing Sheets, a political newcomer, because he is “committed to fighting for the best interests of Texas agriculture, upholding the rule of law and restoring integrity” to the office Miller has held since 2015.

Abbott said Texans deserve an agriculture commissioner with “zero tolerance for criminality.”

Miller, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, has drawn scrutiny during his tenure, including rehiring a close aide last year after the aide pleaded guilty to commercial bribery tied to hemp licensing.

Sheets, a beekeeper who runs a honey business, said Abbott’s endorsement reflects shared conservative priorities. He also cited backing from several agriculture and wildlife groups.
